Talented sports program
TSP Selection Day, to be advised.
The Tomaree High School Talented Sports Program (TSP) is designed to provide students who excel in sports with specialised coaching and an academic framework that enables them to reach both their academic and sporting goals.
The Program will provide talented young sportsmen and women from the Tomaree Peninsula with:
- Specialised coaching
- An experienced teaching staff able to assist with the unique problems of the sporting champion
- The opportunity to complete their Secondary Education in the company of peers with similar aspirations, lifestyle and interests.
The Talented Sports Program provides students with an opportunity to work towards their potential across a number of sports.
The school's curriculum provides students with the maximum opportunities to achieve both their academic and sporting goals. The school can provide a pathway for students from years 7 to 12; Yr 7 and 8 receiving up to 8 hours per fortnight of tuition across a range of team and individual sports. Students in years 9 and 10 are offered a dedicated Physical Activity and Sports Studies course just for them. Weekly sport and Pd/h/pe classes will be the same as for mainstream classes.
The Talented Sports Program is designed to improve students sporting abilities across a range of sports and does not focus on one particular discipline or sport. It is seen as a general program and will have aspects of training and fitness incorporated into the five to ten week units, which focus on sports such as netball, basketball, touch, tennis, soccer and swimming. The program will have an emphasis on skill development, running technique and fitness, as well as including work on nutrition, goal setting and the design of training programs.
The Program differs from the normal pathways taken by students in that students will:
- Be participating with students who have similar goals and skills
- Have access to specialised coaching made possible by alterations to the normal school timetabling procedures. These changes will mean that students in this group will have various Physical Education teachers over the course of the year. Each of these teachers will focus on the sport which is their area of expertise.
- Have access to elite coaching from outside of the school.
- Participate in fitness programmes that run for the school year. Up to three hours per fortnight will be dedicated to fitness and conditioning.
- Be expected to achieve high academic and behavioural standards in order to maintain their position in the group
Students participating in the TSP are contracted to maintain satisfactory progress in their academic curriculum.
Students applying for a TSP placement must demonstrate ability across a range of sports and must satisfy high standards in attitude, work habits and academic achievement.
All students seeking placement in the TSP are required to submit an Application Form. The selection process will include a Fitness and Aptitude Trial across a range of sports in addition to an examination of their school reports.
